MOON BIRDS
The New York Premiere of Moonbirds by native Texan Christopher Woods opened our 2003/2004 season at Theater 54 @ Shetler Studios.
In a Middle Eastern desert wasteland, two international census takers trek laboriously onward, fighting famine, thirst and the aftermath of mass destruction. As the ghosts of a culture ravaged by war haunt their dreams, they struggle with their most human obsessions: food, sex, and of course, an accurate count. Where have all the inhabitants of this once rich land gone? And why is there such fear of the great monsters that fly overhead?

CHARLES DICKENS’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL
The ultimate curmudgeon and miserly character of all time – Ebenezer Scrooge – makes his presence felt at PST’s second annual staged reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, a glorious departure back to the literary roots of Charles Dickens’ beloved and spirited ghost story.
This new concert adaptation takes Dickens’s text to heart, setting some excerpts to music in addition to some 25 holiday songs.
Dickens’ lessons of redemption and healing are read and sung once more, but this production is stripped of stage smoke, flying ghosts, and trapdoors. Dickens taps into that ancient, even pagan aspect of winter as a season for taking stock and new beginnings. This show, like the book, is ultimately about good eating, good drinking, and being good to each other… good lessons to warm audiences on a December evening!

ORCHIDELIRIUM
A U.S. premiere that takes us on flight of fancy through time to discover how something we hold dear can destroy our entire world.
Orchidelirium by Canadian playwright Dave Carley explores the one flower that can cause a fever in the brains of humans; a desire to possess, to create and to control so strong that it has been declared a medical condition. That flower is the orchid and the lovesickness it creates is known as ‘orchidelirium’.
This piece is a hothouse hybrid of fact and fiction, research and hypothesis, scent and sex that focuses on four people in two different centuries whose lives collide because of this shared obsession.
By turns hysterical and heartbreaking, Orchidelirium cautions us of the calamities that can come with unrequited love.
